The UK National lottery had a record breaking year in 2011.

In 2011…

The biggest ever lottery jackpot was paid out at £161,000,000 in July 2011
229 Millionaire were created in 12 months – More than ever before

A study conducted showed that in 2011 Gents were luckier than the ladies, and the best profesion to be in was construction workers who seem to keep winning!

Now in it’s 17th year (how crazy is that) The UK National lottery has created 229 millioniares in 12 months, winning in total a massive £720 million.

The 229 represents an increase of 71 millionaires from 2010. Builders, administrators and transport drivers were said to be the luckiest professions to be in during the year 2011.

60% of all winners were male, with 40% being female. Will 2012 be different ? Does this mean more men than women play the lottery in the United Kingdom?

The new Millionaire raffle from the UK Euromillions franchise made 93 millionaires in 2011, whilst the UK stormed the euromillions prize fund league with lots of big wins. It is noticable that in the early stages of 2012 – the UK is still on the euro-millions winning streak with 2 big winners of £40+ million already by the 10/02/2012.

Since it’s launch in 1994, more than 2,750 millionaires have been created by the UK National lottery.

The national lottery report that many of the big winners, have gone on to create millionaires for themselves since winning it big. Camelot did not expand on this, but at lottomad we presume they mean winners giving family a million pounds.

Now Thirteen Ways to Win

There are now 13 different levels of EuroMillions Lottery prize categories, based on the amount of right numbers matched. As a result of this division into twelve prize categories, the odds of winning a prize in any given draw are even better.

The EuroMillions Lottery is a rolling jackpot lottery game, meaning that the grand prize jackpot is 'rolled - over' and added to the next week's jackpot if the big prize is not won. If the big jackpot prize keeps rolling over week after week and still not won on the twelfth week draw, the grand prize is 'rolled - down' and distributed between the players in the second level, or tier - those who guessed right the five main numbers and only one 'lucky star' number.

Good Causes

A large portion of the revenue gathered by the EuroMillions Lottery goes toward the funding of 'Good Causes' in all of the countries participating in the Lottery, giving back to the communities, funding local activities and local charities.

Euromillions Prize Amounts and Odds of Winning

What are the chances of winning a Euromillions prize? The simple answer is, a lot! There are 13 prize categories in total, with the odds of winning naturally being better for smaller prizes than they are for the jackpot. If you've ever wondered "what are the Euro Millions prizes?" then the table below will answer your question showing not only the average amounts won for each prize band but the odds of winning too:

†This column displays the percentage of the prize fund allocated to each prize level set by the lottery operators. The remaining 9% goes into a separate fund known as the Booster Fund. This Booster Fund is used to boost the jackpot level – often in weeks where the jackpot needs topping up to provide the guaranteed minimum of €15,000,000.

*The highest jackpot amount shown above was never won, this was the amount for draw number 396 in Sterling that would have be awarded to the match 5 main and 2 Lucky Stars winner had there been one. The winner would have to have been from the UK to win this jackpot, the Euro amount was €185 million.

All of the prize data in the table above is taken from Euromillions draw results that have taken place since 10th May 2011 when the new number matrix (addition of two Lucky Stars and the additional prize tier was introduced). The lowest and highest prize amounts shown are for individual winners with the average amount calculated from all the data since the rule change and introduction of the Tuesday draw. An exception is with the match 5 + 2 Lucky Stars prize values – these are total jackpot amounts rather than individual winner amounts for the same period.

The table is updated after each draw with the amounts changing dependent on the most recent Euromillions results.

As you can see, to win the Euromillions prize jackpot you would need to correctly find all five main board numbers and both lucky star numbers. The odds of this occurring are slightly less than 1 in 117 million. Those are very long odds, but when you consider the enormity of the jackpot prize, the cost of a basic entry, and the spectacular entertainment value that this competition offers, we think it’s more than a fair deal.

If the jackpot is not won, it will rollover to the next week and be added to that weeks jackpot prize. There are, however, two exceptions:

  • When the jackpot reaches €185 million (Euromillions Jackpot Prize pool cap). When that happens the jackpot will stay at €185,000,000 until somebody wins it. Prize money that would have been added to the jackpot (but for the cap) is added to the next lowest tier in which there is at least one winner (likely to be 5+1, but could be match-5 only or even lower).
  • If there is an event draw, like a superdraw, the jackpot pool will not rollover, but will straightaway be allocated to the next lower prize category in which there is at least one winner.

Of course, the euromillions draw offers twelve more prize categories apart from the jackpot, and the odds of a player winning one of these are a lot better. In fact, the odds of a player winning the smallest euromillions prize category are an impressive 1 in 23!

Overall, the odds of a player winning any prize are around 1 in 13.
